We have had over 1000 calls this year. Thats the most we have ever had. Fire calls here and there but mostly rescue calls.

Busy Summer

Unfortunately, the Clubhouse Gang has not spent much time at Station 2 this year. However, there has been a number of calls run out of the station so far this year due to some key members responding there consistently.

This summer started off with a bang in May with a house fire. Every time a storm blew thur Ozaukee County it seemed that a building in Mequon was hit by lightening causing a fire. Grafton had a significant house fire in the middle of July. The Forth of July generated many rescue calls and so did the Ozaukee County Fair. Now in the last week and a half there have been two working fires. One was in the city and relatively small. The second one was a barn fire in the town and one of the bigger fires in the last five years.

The city fire was a MABAS 1st alarm fire. The barn fire was a MABAS 3rd Alarm fire with a 5th alarm tender response. In both cases the summer weather made conditions difficult on the fire ground.

Engine 163 was the first engine due on the barn fire. Engine 161 was first due for the city fire.

5 years of Station 2 today

Today is the 5th year that Station 2 has been officially open.

During the past week many things occurred. 163 was put back into service two Saturdays ago with a new hose load. Maxwell St. Day was last Sunday and seemed to be a good event. Three calls were run out of the station also. The last call being on Saturday night was a haz-mat call. 163 and 158 rolled. All the engine companies and 158 just stood by and waited for Ozaukee haz-mat and then Milwaukee haz-mat teams to arrive. The incident lasted about 2 1/2 hours.

163 is back

163 is back in Cedarburg. It will be put back into service on Saturday.
It was a busy day today otherwise. The radio room is another set closer to being complete with some new technology. Station 2 got some bottled water delivered to it. 163 also was washed and got new seatbelts installed.

Status

The Clubhouse Gangs mojo has been seriously hurt over the last few months. Engine 163 has been out of service since late February to receive a new water tank. However, it should be back in service in the next week. Without an engine there has been no point in going out to stand guard and the Brewers have not been entertaining to watch. In the time that Engine 163 has been gone there were three working fire calls. The last two occurred in the past three weeks. One call was for mutual aid to Grafton on a lightning strike, the other call was a house fire on the east side of Cedarburg. Both fires were taken care of quickly by the responding crews.

The summer will be upon us soon. Since there will not be any new trucks to put together it seems as though it could be a quite summer, outside the fact that Washington Ave. is all torn up. Also the beginning of June will mark 5 years of Station 2.

Postings should be more regular now that classes are done.

It has been awhile

Well it has been three weeks since the last post and there was some outrage over the lack of updating.

To begin just as the last post was being uploaded a fire call at one of the nursing homes came across the wire. It seemed that from the reports coming from the dispatch center that a room was involved in fire and had got into the attic. With this report those of us at Station 1 got on Engine 163 and headed south. Upon arrival a moderate smoke condition existed in one of the wings. A 2 1/2 line was pulled into the building along with apartment packs. After about an hour of investigation it was determined that something burnt up in the HVAC unit for the wing and crews cleaned up and returned to quarters.

Other than that the month of January was slow. A majority of the calls were rescue. If a map was used plot our calls most of them would be located on the south side at a certain complex and to our neighbor to the east.

Things have been slow around the Clubhouse as well.

1/7/09 was busy many calls were run. All rescue with one being a car incident. Just about a foot of snow fell yesterday.
Today only one call, a fire call and Engine 161 rolled out of Station 2 with most of the gang on board.

It has been slow around the CFD for the last few months now. Only one day was busy which was the day after Christmas. The radio room update is well underway with the old console removed and a new floor put in. The gang has been busy with the radio room so going out to Station 2 was put on hold. 964 calls were run in total by the CFD in 2009 a majority of them rescue calls. Major fire incidents were up however, with 6 taking place. However, only one incident was raised above a box alarm due to the great volunteers of Cedarburg.

Maybe things will pick up around Cedarburg so that there will be more stuff to post.

Station 1 Radio Room

The Radio Room project has began. It started with the painting of the walls on Saturday. It will continue for the next several weeks and will hopefully be done by the end of January. It was found that after 15-16 years with no cleaning or painting the walls were dirty. Just the painting helped make the room look better.

Otherwise nothing much has happened in the last few weeks. Our call volume has been relatively slow for the the lasts few weeks compared to the rest of the year. So that is about all that has happened.

Last night Tomaso's hosted a thank you dinner for the members of the Cedarburg Fire Department. The food was great and highly appreciated.

Busy Weekend

The past weekend was busy. It began on Friday morning at about 2:30 am when a fire broke out in an apartment above Tomaso's Restaurant. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and contained the fire to one apartment. The people living in the rest of the building were saved by the smoke alarms. The fire only needed a Working Still response do to the location downtown and all of the Volunteers that came. Crews were onscene for 3-5 hours depending what they were assigned to.
After the fire the part to the Clubhouse Gang and Battle Unit 158 and 155 went to Froedert Hospital to do a fire extinguisher training. After getting back from the training some much needed rest was required to recover from the fire.
Later in the day on Friday some of the Clubhouse got together and did some shopping for items that were needed at the station. This also allowed for some driver training on Engine 163. Once back at the station the engine was cleaned for Safety Day.

Safety Day started for the CFD members at 10:30am to set up. The event started at 12:00 pm and lasted until noon. Other than the unusually cold temperatures it was a good event.
On Sunday some of the Clubhouse and Engine 163 went an event for a family in a bad situation. The engine and firefighters hopefully helped lift their spirits. That concluded the the weekend.

Harvest Fest

The weekend was relatively slow at the Clubhouse. A few house keeping items got done and a lot of sports were watched. The weekend however was ended with a fatal traffic crash at the intersection of Wauwatosa Rd. and Sherman Rd.. More on the crash can be seen on the local news websites. Overall it was quiet.

A thing called ERV

Well with school starting and the beginning of the football season summer can be declared over. So it's a good time to look back and ponder on what got accomplished at the Clubhouse this summer. For starters many calls have been run out of the station 51 this year about 20 of those came during the summer maybe more. Engine 162 was put together and put into service in four weeks. Engine 163 spent 13 hours in Cudahy
AND... ERV was completed.
The Emergency Response Vehicle was conceived out of the jealousy of Thiensvilles Kuboda. Now some may say that's a little harsh but it is true. Once we all saw Thiensvilles rig we wanted our own. So after many years (about 2) of trying to get a Kuboda just as a joke a deputy Chief found a used Cushman first responder vehicle on craigslist and proposed the idea. However, this idea was taken further then a joke and the price was right $1600. So the membership voted to purchase and effectively resurrect this golf cart for no more then $5000. To get the cart running $700 in batteries was purchased. After spending the beginning of June with the antiques and begin run around the Headquarters complex ERV was taken to Station 2. On the 28th of June the tear down of ERV began. Everything was taken off to be repainted or replaced. Remind you this was Strawberry Fest weekend, the same weekend 162 was put together. After a few weeks of sitting and parts being shipped to different locations the work began again. The frame was grounded, converted, and painted. The picture below shows the finished frame. Around this time we decided to pick an arbitrary date for ERV to be finished which was August 25th.

Once the frame was done the body was ready to go on after being painted professionally.

Once the body was on reassembly went quickly. The front was put back on along with the metal rear bumper and metal deck. After the deck and front were put on the windshield and roof columns were reattached. Then the roof and roof rack was mounted. The custom seats came in and were mounted. The stainless steel was polished and mounted with the headlights. The large cabinet and the extinguisher was then mounted next. The front bumper came in and the was mounted after that. By this time the vehicle looked like this.(August 23)

This was the major part of the project but a few things were missing. Like most of the lights. After a few nights of wiring and lifetimes worth of profanities ERV lit up like a paperclip stuck into a wall plug. Picture on August 25th.

At this point the major part of the work was gone and only a few minor things need to be done. On the 26th and 27th the cart was lettered. A few days later the last of the things that could be done were done and we declared ERV done. (September 2nd)

The picture below is the whiteboard which gave us inspiration to get done on time along with a few compliments by the higher powers.

The ERV was taken back to the headquarter complex and shown to the membership at the September business meeting. It's first assignment was on September 11th at the varsity football game. At the game it was actually use for what it was designed to be used for to carry someone injured off the field.

As a side note to all those that believed nothing ever got done at Station N0. 2 or bad things were happening there let this summer prove that the Clubhouse Gang busy doing meaningful work and are not causing trouble.

Fire in Northwest

A report of a garage fire was called to dispatch Monday night. First responding units arrived on scene to find smoke coming out of the building. The fire was quickly extinguished after crews arrived. The house and garage were cleared of smoke.

Barn Fire

The CFD was call to Newberg today for a barn fire. Engine 161 and 164 responded.

In other news the ERV is 95% complete. Only a few things have to be put on and it will be done.
August has been a relatively slow month compared to July for the CFD. There has been an increase in calls out of Station 2. The total out of Station 2 for the year is 49 calls.

A lot of things have gone on since the last post.

Engine 162- The engine was put into service on the 23rd of July after a majority of the drivers were qualified on it and delivery class was held. The entire process of getting the new truck was completed in about 9 months. The old engine was sold to Denmark, WI and left Cedarburg on the 24th of July.

Cushman- The body was painted and the chassis was prepped for paint. Once everything is painted the assembly should be quick.

Training- A Mass Casualty Incident training was held on the 25th of July at CHS. Multiple departments participated and a lot was learned from it.

Touch-A-Truck- An event was held at Wayne's Drive-in for little kids to see different municiple vehicles and the Clubhouse Gang joined in by bringing Engine 163.

Oh I almost forgot......
We got another structure FIRE.
The call came at 3:00 PM on Monday July 20th. A neighbor reported it since they had smelt something burning and found smoke coming from the house next door. The first crews quickly arrived on scene but were behind from the get go with a strong wind out of the east and a lack of water. Luckly nobody was in the house at the time and a dog was saved. The fire could not have come at a worse time since we were down an engine. Old 162 had already been bought by Denmark and the nobody had pumped the new Engine 162.

The rest of the week should be interesting it is the Ozaukee County Fair this week.

Task Force 119

On Monday the CFD was part of a MABAS Task Force to help the Cudahy Fire Department at the Patrick Cudahy Plant. Engine 163 was Cedarburg's contribution to the group. The other units in the group were; Mequon Tower, Port Washington Tower and Chief, Thiensville Engine and Chief, Grafton Engine, Saukville Squad. The Task Force met as Mequon Station 2. They left around 6 PM and arrived in staging around 6:30 PM. From that point units were assigned for duty as needed. Engine 163 was assigned to the C-Charlie side of the building around 8:30 PM along with Thiensville. The engine was then shortly assigned to relieve a Cudahy engine in relay pumping. The crew was left for assignment. The crew was assigned to relieve a crew on the roof at around 3-3:30 AM. This assignment included cooling the remaining debris and trying to extinguish the last of fire. At 7:30 AM the crew was relieved and arrived back in Cedarburg at round 8:30 AM.

Another Task Force was scheduled to go back on Wednesday but was called off.

Strawberry Festival Weekend

This weekend was Strawberry Festival in Cedarburg. So the Clubhouse was staffed on Saturday and Sunday. During the preceding week the new engine arrived and the Cushman was moved to Station 2. The with both vehicles at the Clubhouse thing got done. First on Saturday old 162 and new 162 were placed side by side and all the equipment was mounted on the new truck. Here is a sample of the finished product.

On Sunday some small work was done on 162. The majority of the work done was on the Cushman. The exterior was taken apart and the shell taken off. It will now be cleaned and repainted before assembly.

Fire!

Shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning a working structure fire was reported. The CFD responded and knocked down the a majority of the fire in the first twenty minutes. Crews then worked on scene for the next four hours. This could be considered a Clubhouse response since a good portions was on the scene but we came from station 1. However 158 did get to the scene. This was the first house fire for the CFD since May of 2008 and the first house fire in the City since 2004.

The past few weeks have been normal in the amount of calls run by the CFD. However what is unusual has been the lack of fire calls. There has been no more than fifteen calls over a 7 week period. That includes five mutual aid calls. On the other hand the rescue squad is busy as usual.

The Clubhouse has been quiet recently since the lack of calls. Other things have been going on otherwise. Engine 163 got a scene light put on the front of the cab. The station will be the hub of activities involving the new Engine 162 and will be a little more filled then usual. The new engine should arrive sometime next week, hopefully Monday.

There has been no fire calls in two weeks for the CFD. May 2nd was the last call and it was a mutual aid call. It is weird not to have any fire calls in that amount of time. But the rescue squad has been busy.

Engine 163 was first due to an alarm Saturday night. The crew investigated the cause and found out the problem.
This was the twelveth call run out of the Clubhouse in April.

Brush Fires

Well it has been a while since the last post but that is due mainly to the lack of time there has been to post anything with being busy run to all the brush fires. In 2009 alone there has been more grass fire than in all of 2006, 2007, and 2008 combined, which is not a suprise since there were only about two per year. If my numbers are correct the CFD has extinguished seven this year, but we have been called to at least three other controlled burns. Most of this has occured over the past two weeks. On every fire Battle Unit 158 has rolled from the Clubhouse.
In other news the CFD awards banquet was last night and the Brewers season has started. Other than that not to much has changed lately.

A post was needed

The last two weeks have been slow for the CFD in terms of fire calls. This in turn has meant that the Clubhouse Gang has not run in on a call together for two weekends in a row. The crew did however keep busy by cleaning 154 inside and out, two weekends ago. The leftover time was spent watching basketball.

Buzzed

Well it was a quiet Sunday for the CHG with no fire calls at all. Not having any fire calls is not a rare thing and is what normally happens. However the day was not lost. We got to sit out front and listen to the Brewers Spring Training game for the second day in a row. Our peace was broken by a rogue pilot of the Civil Air Patrol who thought they were in Top Gun and decided to buzz the station. It was no suprise to us since we saw them coming. That was all the excitement for the day other than doing a little clean up around the station.

Change of Quarters

Today Engine 163 and Engine 161 did a change of quarters. The CHG did this to give the truck (161) some much needed TLC after a rough winter. The interior was vacuumed, Armor-Alled, windows washed, and floor scrubbed. Nearly every surface in the cab was cleaned. After the interior was done the cab was raised and the batteries checked. The frame was also rinsed off. Before the cab was lowered the placement for the new hammer was located on the bumper. 158 was sent out to go pick up bolts to mount the hammer. While the two on 158 were gone some R&R took place while listening to the Brewers Spring Training game. Since it was a beautiful day the doors were opened and we sat out front. This was short lived since a call came in. 158 was first due from the hardware store with two. 161 was second due with five. Between the two trucks the situation was mitigated and we headed back. Once back at the station the truck had the hammer mounted. A food run was initiated after this and the badminton set was put up outside. After some badminton and food it was time to go home and call it a day. 161 was taken back to Station 1 and 163 brought back to Station 2.

Busy Sunday

Sunday, typically a day in which we get few calls, proved to be the opposite. The CFD ran a total of five calls. The CHG ran on two of the calls. Engine 163 was first due to a call in the heart of the City and was again first due a little while latter on another call in the City. The time not spent on the calls was filled with watching the race. That was easier said then done after coming back from the first call due to a power outage that cut off our cable service. The day could have only been better if the weather had been nice but that was not the case with the wonderful wintry mix we had.

Saturday Oooh! Oooh!

While the weather was not very nice, the day was still good. The day started a little latter then normal and nothing was done until after the MU game. Once things got going a lot got done. Truck maintenance the done on 163 and 158. 163 was in need of a lot of attention. Both trucks also had tool maintenance done along with SCBA checks on 163. After all the maintenance was done the badminton net was set up. Some mean badminton was played. The recreation was interrupted by a fire call. The Clubhouse Gang was once again first due with Engine 163. Engine 161 also responded. The call was not much of anything and all units were released after about half an hour. Some of the packs on 163 needed to be filled and other supplies were needed so we went to headquarters. After the supply run we headed back to Station 2. After off loading the supplies we installed a new flashlight onto the engine. While this was going on a couple of visitors came the CPD K9 unit. Once we were done with that we ate. Since we had got some new shuttlecocks we decided to test them out. Needless to say they were not up to the challenge of CHGCBL and began to fall apart. This pretty much ended the day and after writing this much, its time to call it a night I need rest.

The Beginning of CHGCBL

The Clubhouse Gang is beginning a badmiton league. We have know idea on when or who will be competing so CFD members ask if interested.

158 Responds

Battle Unit 158, Squad 153 and 152 all responded to a call Saturday evening. The large number of vehicles that responded was due to the fact that 158 and 153 were out practicing.

Busy Saturday

Saturday saw a lot of things get accomplished. A few of the gang saw a presentation for most of the day. A lot was learned by those that went and the information that was heard will be put to good use. The ones that did not go worked on Engines 161, and 164. The work done on 161 was minimal and entailed mounting a new flashlight. The work done on 164 was substantial and took most of the day. The fan for the compartment vent system had stopped working and needed to be fixed. First access had to be gained to the fan which was mounted in the pump house. This turned out to be relatively easy after a few minutes of wrestling with the aluminum tread plate. After we got in the pump house the fan was quickly removed as you can see in the picture below.

But this was only the beginning of what turned out to be a long project. As it turned out the old PVC piping that was connected to the fan broke off of the pipe going to the other side of the truck. That is what the white tipped pipe on the left hand side is. So it was determined that new pipe had to be installed. That was easier said than done. The pipe that went to the passenger side compartments ended up coming off from its connection and had to be fixed.

In the middle of the picture is where the disconnection occurred. Once this was all done the new PVC could be mounted. Once that was finished the fan was put back into place.

Here you can see the fan being remounted and the hero of the day, Rex. He was the one crawling inside the bowels of 164. The truck was quickly put back together because we had ordered pizza and we were hungry.

After we ate our food we began prepping for the new television in the meeting room by tearing out the shelving that to old one was sitting on and by touch up painting the wall. While this happened a radio was found so that the wash bay could have one. That was the day at Station 1.

Work Week in Review

The past week around the CFD has been relatively slow. The biggest event of the week was Thursday night training. Duty group 3 had their CPR re-certification. Anyone else who showed up to train got to review the 4 gas meter, go through a hose maze, and test their skills in a two minute drill.

It was a quiet weekend for the Clubhouse Gang with no calls on Saturday or Sunday. However, it allowed for the uninterrupted viewing of the Badgers game and race on Sunday. The events were only watched after all the snow was plowed and shoveled away from the station. Some of the crew investigated a few tools on the engine. Stay tuned for the next post.
